Knightia excelsa commonly known as rewarewa or New Zealand honeysuckle, is a tall, narrow native tree with distinctive dark green, leathery leaves and striking upright clusters of tubular red flowers that produce abundant nectar, attracting birds such as tūī and bellbirds; it typically grows to around 10–25 metres tall and is found in lowland to montane forests across New Zealand, valued for its timber, ecological importance, and ornamental flowering display, it’s a hardy native tree that prefers warm, moist, well-drained environments but is fairly adaptable once mature.
