Nothofagus solandri, commonly known as black beech, is a species of southern beech native to New Zealand.Black beech is an evergreen tree characterized by smooth, dark gray to nearly black bark and small, serrated leaves. The leaves are glossy and oval, typically less than 2 centimeters long. The wood is hard, dense, and fine-grained, valued for flooring and furniture. Trees often grow with straight trunks and dense canopies that shade the forest understory.
