Griselinia lucida, commonly known as Akapuka, is a striking New Zealand native shrub or small tree valued for its bold, glossy foliage and lush appearance. Its large, leathery green leaves create a tropical effect in gardens, while in the wild it is often found growing as an epiphyte or clinging to rocky outcrops.
Typically reaching 4–8 metres in height, Akapuka adapts well to a range of garden settings. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil and grows well in partial shade through to full sun. Once established, it is notably tolerant of wind and coastal conditions, making it an excellent choice for exposed New Zealand gardens.
