Metrosideros excelsa, commonly known as pōhutukawa, is a large, spreading evergreen coastal tree famous for its brilliant crimson, brush-like flowers in summer, along with leathery dark green leaves and a wide, sculptural canopy, typically growing up to 20 metres tall and much wider, and it is highly valued in New Zealand for coastal planting, shade, and its iconic seasonal display.
It typically takes about 8–15 years to reach around 5 metres tall, depending on conditions.
- Faster growth (closer to 8–10 years): warm coastal climate, full sun, well-drained soil, regular moisture when young
- Slower growth (10–15+ years): cooler areas, poor soil, or exposure to frost and wind
It establishes steadily rather than quickly, but once settled, growth becomes more consistent.
