Melicope ternata, commonly known as wharangi, is a New Zealand native shrub or small tree that typically grows up to about 8 metres tall and is recognised for its glossy lime-green trifoliate leaves, small yellow-green flowers that appear in early spring, and dry brown fruit capsules which split open to reveal shiny black seeds; it is commonly found in coastal and lowland forests, where it prefers sheltered, well-drained sites with good air movement and full sun to partial shade, and it is slightly frost tender but otherwise well adapted to a range of New Zealand growing conditions.
